This page says what Spot a Stray collects, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

  • Your account. Your name, email and profile picture from Google, or the email you sign in with. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase.
  • Your reports. The photo, the place it was taken (GPS), the time, and the details you type in.
  • Contact details you add to a report. Your name and phone number are shown on that report so people can reach you about the animal. Leave them empty if you do not want that.
  • Your pets. If you register a pet's microchip, we keep the chip number and the pet details you add. Messages between you and someone who found your pet are kept so you can both read them.
  • Alerts. If you turn on alerts near you, we keep a device token, the distance you chose, and where your phone was when you last opened the app, so we can send them. Turn alerts off and we delete the token.
  • Error reports. When the app crashes, a technical error report is sent to our error tracker so we can fix it.
  • A sign-in cookie. One cookie keeps you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies.

What is public

Reports are public: anyone can see the photo, the animal details, the place on the map, and any contact details you added.

Your pets are not public. Nobody can list or browse them. Someone who types the exact chip number sees the pet's name, photo, breed, age and your notes, and can message you through the app. They never see your name, phone or email, and you never see theirs unless one of you writes it in a message. The owner sees the finder's first name, and their location only if the finder chooses to add it.

Where it is stored

Reports and photos are stored with Cloudflare. Sign-in and alerts use Google Firebase.

We do not

  • Sell your data.
  • Show ads.
